Nothings comes for free ,except  getting useful articles like this :) .Everything has it's own price !All carrier options available in the world has their own  pros and cons , Yes right ! no carrier option is best or worst ,

So how to decide which carrier is good for you ?

it 's simple all you have to do is create a checklist of what you want in life & where you can compromise !

here in this article we will discuss about pros and cons of Merchant Navy

Pros

Time :

Life of a person working in Merchant navy industry is not simple (like in any other field ) it's bounded by rules ,  self discipline. Being on a ship for about 4-6 months in a row without much connectivity , sounds really boring , but also you get 3-5 months gap (depending on company and contract ) .If you look at big picture 3-5 months is lot .
Most of Mariner do
  • follow their passion
  • Travel with family
  • teach at Mariner institute
  • working on their projects
  • build their business
  • work on their portfolio
  • learn a new skill
these things can be easily do without have to worry about your job, as most office jobs require you work for 10-12 hours daily which is exhausting and then focusing on these things is difficult and in most of the cases these things can't go hand to hand with office job ,but  in merchant navy it can !

Money:

Lot of people think there is a lot of money in merchant navy which isn't wrong technically ,We are paid well if you are in a reputed company as compared to other similar job on land ! But if you also see the risk involved it makes some sense as we are away from family and our live may come in danger .

Traveling:

More or less you will have opportunity to travel when your ship is in port , it might be few hours or a shore leave where you will have chance to explore different countries which isn't possible for a Indian middle class person especially in early stages of their carriers

Exposure :

On a ship there are people from across the world working together , people from different countries , religion and entirely different society .So there will be lot of  Exposure to different people from across the globe which will make you more open minded and help to see thing from different perspective , and communicating with people from different origin will improve your communication skills

Discipline life :

Yes discipline ! To achieve anything big and Worth enough in life requires consistent effort which comes from self discipline  and this is one of the best investment one can make in his life , self discipline not only helps in achieving big goals but it also helps in maintaining a good work/life balance. In merchant Navy self discipline is important not only for one's safety but for safety of entire crew onboard

Cons:

Availability :

This is one of the major drawbacks of Merchant Navy ,for a long time (say 6-8 months) one stays away from family and friends , this means in case of emergency availability is not possible immediately ,usually it takes about 3 days to reach back home when conditions are favorable ,if sailing in an open seas and far from shore it can take more days !

Effect on Relationships :

Humans are Social Animals ,they need relationship and to keep a healthy relationship spending time together is necessary, Staying away from family for long time will eventually have an effect on your relationship, your family will start to live without you completely if you don't pay attention !. Your kids and family might treat you as an ATM machine , a person who is just there to pay the bills . This is will effect on your mental health So a proper work /life balance is utmost important .

Money :

This sounds weird right as i have just talked about it in Pros section ,then why in Cons ! The reason is because the salary of officers in merchant navy hasn't increased since 2009 internationally , it had remained about the same , so if you are from a country where the value of dollar is more then it can be good ,say - In India the value of dollar has increased to almost double from 2009 so even when the basic salary remains same internationally but in India your salary is more in local currency  i.e INR

Finding a Partner :

In this profession finding a good life partner is very difficult because no one will want there counter part to stay away from them for so long because of there job, because of this many marriages fell apart !
And in Merchant Navy if you are involved in a divorce cases you cannot sail as you are not considered mentally fit for the job until the case is closed which might takes months to year .

Health Issues :

Long sail will have effect on mental heath as well as physical health , working in noisy ,hot and rough engine room environment will show it's effect in time and might lead to strokes ,cardiac arrest ,hearing loss  ,if not taken care off, so taking breaks from sails and regular exercise is the key to maintain .
