The key to productivity - Deep Work

The Key to Productivity

In the book 'Deep work ' Cal Newport divides the work as shallow and deep  in which shallow being the work which can be easily done , replicated or does not involves a higher level of complexity and deep work is a work which requires a higher level of consciousness ,cannot be replicated and usually involve a higher level of complexity and demands intense concentration .which is true !(that's what i think ).

in the upcoming times with the technology developing at even fast pace , three groups of people will have an advantage

those who can work well and creatively with intelligent machines

those who are best at what they do

and those who have the capital

this may seems like an end for low skills jobs but it can't be ignored !

and the abilities require for being in the above group are-

the ability to quickly master hard things

the ability to produce it at an elite level of both quality and quantity .

To learn things requires intense concentration which can be easily achieved by deep work .

If you are still wondering what is "deep work" then

it is Professional activities performed in a state of distraction free concentration that push your cognitive capabilities to their limit. These efforts create new ,improve your skills , and are hard to replicate.

  putting it in simple language

when you are in distraction-free place , focusing your full attention on the task at hand , your abilities to understand it , perform it reach their level which unlocks a deeper depth of understanding of  your work (task) and can make you more creative .

From booking a cab , to ordering food  ,social media ,  checking emails , games , Netflix etc are just few clicks away it's hard to ignore them in this day and age ,also that the fact we are addicted to it .We get a ton of information that we don't to need , all this does it fills our brain and we find it hard to concentrate for long hours. This makes deep work a difficult one because an urge to check that notification or an email is hard to control and we all have a limited will power ,! yes limited no matter how hard you try if your will power is exhausted you will eventually get back to it .

There are many ways to integrate deep work into your schedule/routine , below there are three 3 main discussed

The Monastic Philosophy  of Deep work scheduling

this philosophy involves cutting out of world for a couple of week or months and then work on a single task , this attempts to maximize the deep work efforts by eliminating shallow obligations .

Donald Knuth , man famous for many computer science innovation performs this kind of deep work practice.

so if you are someone who take of couple of week and go to a place to do task , this one is for you !

The Bimodal Philosophy of Deep work scheduling

This philosophy involves taking some days to perform deep work in a distraction free environment and rest of the weekdays are open for anything else .this can work best if you have at least one whole day to carry out deep work ,it can produce extreme productivity if the subjects dedicates enough time to such endeavors to reach maximum cognitive intensity  - where breakthrough occurs . This is because minimum unit of time for deep work in this philosophy is one full day.

The Rhythmic Philosophy of Deep work scheduling

This philosophy require few hours daily to perform deep work but that has to be perform on a regular basis to achieve cognitive intensity , this works on the principle that practicing daily and incorporating deep work into your daily schedule will help you reaching cognitive intensity again if you are putting enough hours . This can be like waking up and working say at 5:30 to 7:30 in morning and as you get better at it, increasing your time.
